Fitness Tracker App Reveals Secret Military Base Locations

Last week, Nathan Ruser discovered that the locations of military bases in Syria and Afghanistan were accidentally revealed when troops using the Strava fitness tracker app uploaded their location data to the cloud.

Ruser discovered the data while he was browsing a mapping website. To him it seemed like a number of military personnel were divulging their jogging routes around the military bases. Normally it wouldn’t be a problem for location information to be public, but the troops’ location doesn’t blend in with other activity. In Syria and Afghanistan, there are not many other Strava users, so those who are users, stick out like a sore thumb.

The military already has a policy on this issue. Judging from this report, troops need to be reminded of the policy.
